Beautiful high-quality model 1850 US officer’s sword, high relief decorated pommel, open floral work decorated hilt, unusual sheet silver spiral grip emulating shark skin, high relief pierced scabbard mounts. Sword was sold & etched on ricasso “Tomes & Melvain /New York”. 33” Gold decorated blade made by Clauberg, Solingen w/ fine patriotic etched panels including large central motto “PRO VIRTUTE BELLICA” which translates from Latin “For Valor in War”. Middle mount is engraved "Presented to / Col R.B. Craufurd / 8th Conn. N.G. / by the officers of his Regt. / 1865" Robert Bruen Craufurd (1822-1892) born in New York, grew up & worked in banking in Norwalk Connecticut till his death. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery there. CONDITION: fine overall, blade retains virtually all its original polish, luster & gold background. Traces of gilt found in protected areas of mounts & hilt, balance polished brass patina, polished steel scabbard body w/ minor denting. (02-14525/JS). $3,000-5,000.
