MILITIA OFFICER’S SWORD. Overall length: 38 1/2". Blade length: 30”. This exceptionally high-grade Militia Officer’s sword is likely for a General Officer and dates from the Mexican War to the Civil War. The blade has a narrow central fuller running nearly the length of the blade. Blade is etched over 2/3 of its length with various foliate, patriotic & military motifs, including a large spread-wing eagle. Heavily gilded hilt with a downturned guard that bears the Massachusetts state seal surrounded by a wreath of leaves & flourishes. Simple cruciform guard with star embellished ends. The chained guard joins the artistically rendered knight’s head pommel just below the visor. The detail on the pommel is quite exceptional accentuating the scaled armor & decorated helm with feathered crest. Beautiful hexagonal silver grip with deeply cast oak leaves & acorns on both sides. Gilded brass scabbard with various foliate etching and a large spray of arms with liberty cap. The upper engraved feature is the most interesting, being an eagle atop a shield engraved with the Massachusetts “bent arm & sword”. CONDITION: blade shows some original factory polish with scattered staining. Gold finish on the hilt is nearly complete, as is the silver finish on the grip. The scabbard retains 97% of original gilding and the engraving detail is superb. There is a slight bend at the tip of the scabbard, not affecting the blade of the sword. (02-19580/BF). $2,500-3,500.
