This sword was presented by his company when Capt. Brady was Provost Marshall of Harper’s Ferry. His men thought highly of him as this was expensive sword in 1863. The sword was made by Clauberg of Solingen Germany retailed by possibly Canfield & Brother in Baltimore a known Clauberg agent. Finely engraved between high relief decorated scabbard mounts on scabbard: “Presented to / Capt. Jas. W. Brady / by Company B. 9th Md Infy / Harper’s Ferry, Va / Oct. 28, 1863”. This extra fancy model 150 Staff & Field sword has eagle head quillon, drooped wing heraldic eagle in guard with pierced foliate design, pommel with high relief eagle & shield, spiral sheet silver grip. The top of pommel was mounted with large cabochon (now missing). Some may have thought it was valuable gemstone, but garnets were most typically used, this is easily restored if wanted. The solid brass scabbard has beautiful decorated mounts in high relief, top mount has panoply of arms, middle has eagle, and drag has soldier running with American flag, even the throat and blade are drag relief sculpted to match. 32” blade finely etched with patriotic motifs including fasces & liberty cap with riband: “IN HOC SIGNO VINCES”, spread wing eagle “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, fancy monogramed “US” and panoply of arms with 13 star American shield. James Brady sword was part of the late Arthur “Gil” Barrett and he displayed this as part of his Maryland collection for many years. CONDITION: very good overall, blade retains most of its original luster & finish, staining, pitting at ricasso. Brass has been cleaned and toned to light mustard patina, verdigris, gold wash remains in protected areas. (02-17010/JS). $6000-8000.
