SABER WITH SERPENT GUARD & EXQUISITE TRI COLOR BLADE LIKELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE STATE OF VIRGINIA. Overall length: 36". Blade length: 29 3/4". Incredibly, the single fullered blade has virtually 100% of the original gilded engraving, over fire blue, with white panels over 2/3 of the blade. The gilded engraving includes a large spray of arms, raised wing American eagle, Indian head & various foliate motifs. Also, on one side of the blade between the 2 patriotic and foliate white panels, is a gilded rendition of what appears to be Virtus, the Goddess of bravery and military strength. The inclusion of the Virtus rendition indicates a possible association with the State of Virginia. Gilded brass hilt with finely executed raised wing eagles on each languet. The guard terminates with a swirled quillon on 1 end and connects to a gracefully articulated serpent knuckle bow with oak leaves and acorns. The head of the serpent joins with the detailed eagle head pommel forming a very impressive hilt. Carved and crosshatched certifiably antique ivory grip with horizontal banding. Heavily gilded scabbard with deeply engraved oak leaves extending 7 1/2" from the tip and 14" from the throat. There is a central 8 pointed star between the scabbard bands. CONDITION: blade is truly like new with substantial original factory polish present. The engraving, combined with the blued and gilded decoration, visually jumps right off the blade. Hilt retains the majority of the original gilded finish. Grip shows only tiny age cracks. Scabbard retains nearly all of its original gilded finish with vibrant engraving. (02-17714/BF). $5,000-7,000.
