SWORD. Overall length: 41”. Blade length: 34 3/8”. Blade has a single wide fuller with a single narrow fuller near the spine. Blade is etched over half its length with numerous military, patriotic & foliate motifs on a gold field. There is a panel near the ricasso on a gold field that reads “WH HORSTMANN & SONS PHILADELPHIA”. The ricasso is marked with a king’s head indicating maufactured by Gebruder Weyersberg. Heavily gilded hilt with 2-branch semi-basket guard adorned with foliate motifs. Highly embellished pommel with American eagle on the face. Silvered grip spirally wrapped with 3-section brass wire. Silver finished scabbard with gilded brass mounts. This sword is interesting because it has a Horstmann blade and an obvious Clauberg hilt. Possibly a special order or the blade was replaced. CONDITION: blade has areas of original factory polish. Hilt has nearly all of the gilded finish remaining. Grip is undamaged. Scabbard mounts have most of the original gilding. The body of the scabbard has several small dents likely from children “fencing” with the sword & scabbard. (02-19251/BF). $1,500-2,500.
