SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL, WITH FN MANUFACTURED SLIDE. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 5689c. Bbl. 4 7/8". 1 of only 2,150 P.38 semi-automatic pistols mfg. by Mauser with a sub-contracted slide mfg. by Fabrique Nationale originally intended for Walther. The left side of the slide is marked "P.38", followed by Walther's mfg. code and the 2-digit year of mfg. "ac/ 43", and the S#, with Mauser Eagle/WaA135 acceptance proofs and an eagle firing proof marked on the right. Frame and slide exhibit a phosphate finish, with the bbl. exhibiting a blue finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece grooved black Polymid 6 grips. Dovetailed blade front sight, with U-notch rear sight. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, slide, bbl., and locking block. MAGS: 1 blued 8-rd., with a Mauser Eagle/WaA135 proof on the spine. CONDITION: very good, with metal components retaining the majority of their original arsenal phosphate and blue finishes, exhibiting some areas of light to mild wear and thinning that show through to gray patina, with some scattered spots of age related discoloration. Bbl. exhibits a few scattered spots of mild pitting. Firing pin indicator retains fair amounts of its original phosphate finish, with the balance exhibiting a gray patina and areas of age related discoloration. Near mirror bore, exhibiting some scattered spots of light to mild surface oxidation and pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Safety lever decocker functions appropriately when cycled by hand. Grips show some superficial marks from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. A very nice example of a seldom encountered Mauser P.38, assembled with an FN mfg. slide. PROVENANCE: the Estate Collection of Charles Wagner. (25-317/MLW). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
