GERMAN WWI MAUSER C96 "RED 9" SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH MATCHING STOCK HOLSTER. Cal. 9x19mm. S# 74077. Bbl. 5 1/2". C96 "Red 9" semi-automatic pistol mfg. by Mauser under contract for the Imperial German military to supplement the supply of 9x19mm pistols, namely the P.08 Luger. The top flat of the faceted breech is marked "WAFFENFABRIK/ MAUSER/ OBERNDROF A/N", with the S# marked on the left quarter flat, a double crowned "U" proof marked on the left flat (repeated on top of bolt), and an Imperial military acceptance proof marked on the right flat. Right side of the frame is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER/ OBERNDORF A. NECKAR". Frame and bbl./bbl. extension exhibit a rust blue finish, with the trigger, safety lever, rear sight slide, bolt stop, and extractor exhibiting a nitre blue finish. Bolt is polished in-the-white. Frame is mounted with 2-piece grooved wood red "9" grips, and features a lanyard ring on the butt. Fixed blade front sight with tangent V-notch rear sight graduated 50-500. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, floorplate, sub-frame, hammer, sear, locking block, bbl./bbl. extension, bolt stop, bolt, as well as the grips. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: imperially proofed wood stock/holster matching via "077" on the lug. Stock/holster is accompanied by a brown leather harness marked "ACT.GES.H.THIELE/ DRESDEN./ 1916." on the rear above "BAXII16", appearing to indicate issue to the Bekleidungsamt Armeekorps II (Clothing Depot / Quartermaster of the II Army Corps.) in 1916. Front pouch of harness contains a spare mag. spring, with the stud retaining a "1914" dated Iron Cross, 2nd Class. Cleaning rod is a contemporary replacement. CONDITION: metal components retain the vast majority of their original arsenal rust blue finish, exhibiting some light edge wear, a few spots of light wear and thinning, as well as some light pitting overall. Floorplate and grip straps exhibit mild wear and thinning that is fading to gray patina. Underside of bbl. exhibits some lines of stock/holster wear. Nitre blue parts are very good, with worn areas fading to gray patina. Mirror bore, exhibiting some scattered spots of light pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show a few superficial marks and impressions from handling and storage, but are otherwise very good overall. Stock is very good, showing some superficial marks and minor impressions, with consistent light to mild surface oxidation present on the hinge plate. Lug show areas of wear and thinning, with scattered spots of light surface oxidation. Harness remains malleable, exhibiting wear and scattered handling marks with some spots of minor age related cracking and crazing. A very nice, attractive, and all matching example of a German World War I Mauser C96 "Red 9" pistol. (25-4570/MLW). CURIO. $3,000-5,000.
