BOXLOCK PERCUSSION PISTOL. Cal. 48 Smoothbore. NSN. Bbl. 8 1/2". Boxlock percussion pistol of unusual design, likely of Eastern European / Mediterranean origin. The bbl. features raised silver colored ornamentation along the top, which is also present around the circumference of the faceted breech section. Additionally, the bbl. features 2 bands at the end of the breech, with 3 bands approx. 7/8" from the cannon flared style muzzle. 1-piece wrap around wood grip features ornate wire inlays that terminate in apparent gold or brass foliate patterns. Rnd. grooved pommel cap with lanyard stud and ring. Bbl. appears to have been turned on a lathe, and is not inline with the breech area on the interior, with the breech extending into bore approx. 1/8" at its widest point in the upper left quadrant. Action is relatively crude comparatively, featuring 2 hammered pins for the unadorned hammer and trigger mechanisms. CONDITION: metal components have faded to a dark gray patina, exhibiting patches of mild pitting predominately on the action. Raised ornamentation appears to have been cleaned at one time, exhibiting a bright appearance. Action functions appropriately when cycled by hand. Grip shows some superficial marks from handling and storage, with wire inlays remaining intact. An extremely unusual Eastern European / Mediterranean boxlock percussion pistol. (01-28220/MLW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
