CONFEDERATE BOWIE KNIFE WITH ORIGINAL BELT & SHEATH, PRIVATE ROBERT HOGAN, 24TH MOUNTED TEXAS INFANTRY. 12.25” overall, 7.75” clip point blade signed “SARTORIUS”. Full tang, pinned horn slab grips, 3.5” oval brass crossguard, one horn slab has name inscribed “R. B. Hogan”. The only maker marked Texas Confederate bowies documented are signed by Augustus Sartorius, foreman of San Jacinto Armory, and this is only 2nd documented example. This example was captured by colonel of 15th Maine at Aransas Pass, TX December 2, 1863. This knife has sharpened 3” clip made for hand-to-hand combat, clip is normally flat false edge which is great for utilitarian use, but sharpened quite useful for that swift uppercut. 24” of original 2.5” wide belt is attached to original brown leather sheath with integral belt loop. An article from Confederate Veteran by shop foreman details manufacture of this rare surviving bowie knife. This knife is pictured in Dan Hartzler’s 1986 text “Presentation Confederate Swords & Revolvers” from George Lower collection, though Hartzler was unable to decipher “Sartorius” mark on blade which is well known among Bowie knife aficionados today. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Copy of Confederate Veteran Article. CONDITION: excellent overall, blade has most of its original luster and razor-sharp including clip, belt and sheath supple and could not be much better. This is the finest Confederate Texas Bowie extant. (02-19059/JS). $15,000-30,000.
