RIFLE NEARLY AS NEW. Cal. 375 H&H. S# 2540 (1955). This rifle was ordered in 1954 and delivered in 1955 to Southern Rhodesia and probably has seen fewer that 50 rounds since. It has 25" medium weight barrel engraved "Holland's" ".375" "MAGNUM" "Rimless" "Cartridge" ""HYKRO" Steel" at breech end. Barrel is mounted with one standing one folding express rear sight in stippled island base, banded on sling loop and banded on front sight ramp with silver bead protected by Holland's flip up hood with push button detent. Top of barrel is engraved "Holland & Holland. 98. New Bond Street, London." Standard length model 98 Mauser action features stippled top of receiver and turned down bolt handle. S# is on side wall. Flag safety is gold inlaid ("SAFE"). Black lacquered alloy drop box bottom metal is fitted with large coin slotted takedown screw. Front of hinged floorplate is engraved "Made in England"; center of floorplate "4 CARTdgs". S# is on trigger guard bow. Once captive takedown screw is loosened, barrel and receiver tip out of stock. Pistol grip buttstock made of lightly fiddle figured European walnut measures 14-3/8" over Silver pad and features left hand cheekpiece, case hardened trap grip cap containing spare front sight, recoil bolt, classic Holland style point pattern checkering at grip and around forend and a sling loop along with a vacant silver oval on toeline. CONDITION: exceptionally fine retaining nearly all original finishes as applied by Holland's in 1954. There are only very few minor scratches found on barrel and some minor marks in wood finish which shows some dryness on left side. Recoil pad has compressed somewhat and hardened. Bore is bright and shiny with strong sharp rifling throughout. Mechanically fine. Rifle is fitted with a leather sling. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (24-6558/MGM). CURIO. $10,000-15,000.
