Cal. 8x57 (8mm Mauser). NSN. Bbl. 23 1/2". Blade front sight without protective hood. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000m. WWII German K98k rifle reworked by Hungary post-war. German serial number was scrubbed during rework. Receiver top has faint "dou 44" markings, denoting 1944 mfg. by Waffen Werke Brunn II in occupied Czechoslovakia. Left side of receiver has "Mod 98" marking. Parts have mixed numbers with an added R prefix Hungarian number on the buttplate. Bolt body is an Imperial Kar98a type. Arsenal rework type blue finish. Laminated stock set with left side, Hungarian-added, bottom-mounted sling hardware. K98k-style sling is present. Left side of butt has circled "R" cartouche. No cleaning rod is present. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: bym44-coded S84/98 bayonet with matching-numbered scabbard in good condition. Pommel of bayonet shows scattered oxidation. CONDITION: stock set has an arsenal rework appearance with a deep gouge on the underside of the forend; the stock otherwise shows a few smaller gouges, a thin crack on the handguard, scattered dings, and handling wear. Front band has a silvery gray appearance with some light pitting, dings, and oxidation. Balance of metal retains 50% arsenal rework blue with pitting on rear sight base, scattered fading to gray, some dings, and oxidation. Safety does not function and will require attention. Action otherwise functions properly when hand-cycled. Bore has scattered frosting and pitting but evident rifling. PROVENANCE: the estate collection of Charles Wagner. (24-4636/MJC). CURIO. $300-500.
