RIFLE. Cal. 8 Bore (7 groove rifling, groove dia. .850). S# NSN. 28" octagon to round twist barrel with under rib is fitted with one standing, two nested folding leaf rear and steel blade front sights. Top flat is engraved "I. HOLLIS & SONS LONDON" behind sight and "Made Expressly For F & C" in front of sight. Heavy patent breech and iron are scroll engraved. Breech is unvented. Front spring island lock with large serpentine hammer is engraved with matching scroll within geometric borders. Lock is also marked with two "IH&S" logos surrounded by "MAKER TO HER MAJESTYS WAR DEPARTMENT". Walnut half stock with German silver cap is iron mounted. Trigger guard has spur forming pistol grip. A rosewood ramrod with brass tip and tail (worm under cap) mounts through two plain pipes and matching thimble. CONDITION: very good as partially refinished. Barrel retaining nearly all of a good re-brown. Other metal parts show cleaning to silver highlights over brown. Stock retains most of what it appears to be its original oil finish with some added oil. There are some minor repairs noted on left side of barrel channel with replaced wood on right side between lock and patent breech. There is loss of wood on right side of top tang. Bore is very good with strong rifling throughout and some scattered pitting. Lock is good.
