This wallet has a penned inscription that reads, “Jonathan Allen’s pocket Book - Presented to Margaret A Allen by F. Allen”. There is a pasted in paper tag w/ an early ink inscription that reads, “Jonathan Allen Born in Chilmark, Martha’s Vineyard. Sept 2. 1734. Died in Chilmark 1784. Took his degree from Harvard College 1757. He became a lawyer, as was also his father, John Allen. Jonathan Allen was the father of Frederic Allen.”. There is a printed card pasted in the wallet that reads similarly to above that is dated 1868. Leather wallet is brown in color & measures approx. 7 1/8" x 5" closed. There are several compartments for holding bank notes & papers. A partial label on the inside reads, “William Bibby, _ _ _er, at the Black Cap, _ _fenwick, Liverpool”. CONDITION: exceptionally solid for its age. There are minor separations & some scuffs to the leather. (02-13956/BF). $200-300.
