WEED, 17th & 25th NEW YORK. Classic sky blue single breasted overcoat with cape, one sleeve has cotton lining with contractor name and sewn cloth label covering most of it "MS / HA WEED / NYV". Hiland Weed entered service September 1861 as assistant surgeon and the 17th New York infantry, later promoted to surgeon 25th New York infantry. The unit took part in the Peninsula Campaign, Dr. Weed received a severe gunshot wound to the left knee May 27th 1862 at Battle of Hanover Court House. A few months of rehabilitation brought Doctor Weed back to his regiment in September just before the Battle of Antietam. Doctor Weed remained with his regiment but at Fredericksburg in December contracted a fever, but continued with his unit till discharged after the battle of Chancellorsville in July of 1863. Dr. Weed’s Infantry great coat has survived as a reminder of the cold Fredericksburg campaign. The accompanying tintype shows an elderly Weed wearing his GAR membership medal with some of his family. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: brief history of Dr. Weed (1838-1905) with transcripts of a couple of his wartime letters telling of his wounds. CONDITION: coat is very good overall with few insignificant stains and moth specks, worsted dark blue lining is complete with an old contemporary repair, one sleeve lining is missing. Coat buttons are standard enlisted eagle buttons and are all complete. Cape has small eagle buttons which appear complete and original. The attached wool belt has both eagle button fasteners. Tintype image is very good with good contrast. (02-24321/JS). NON-GUN. $4,000-7,000.
