PICKELHAUBE. A very fine example of an Imperial German Infantry Officer’s dress helmet, from Bavaria, with black horsehair plume. Helmet has a gilded brass Bavarian front plate along with gilded brass chinscales, quatrefoil spike base, plume holder, rear spine & visor trim. There is an officer’s grade Bavarian kokarde on the left side and a national colors kokarde on the right. The underside of the front visor is green, and the underside of the rear visor is red. The scallop topped sweatband has an impressed maker’s label that appears to show a 4-horse chariot with the words “___ aheg Pa____”. The top of the sweatband has a cream-colored interwoven silk band, and the crown liner is 2-piece green silk. CONDITION: the helmet body is quite sound with no visible damage. All parts retain most of their original gilded finish. Kokarden show light wear. The plume’s color remains crisp. The interior shows light wear with very minor stains on the green silk liner. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18795/BF). $1,800-2,500.
