This fine Imperial German presentation cutlass measures 22 1/2" overall. The blade has a single wide fuller and is etched over 8 3/4" of its length. The etching includes foliate & hunting motifs, including a tricolor gold & black panel that reads “Ehrengeschenk des Allgemeinen Deutschen Jagdschutz Vereins fur Heinrich Emil Wendschuh Unterfurstercandidat i/Gebirge”. Gilded brass hilt featuring a cross guard with a downturned shell guard & deer hoof quillons. The pommel has a sleeping dog on the top and the grip is staghorn. The hilt is wrapped with a dark green & silver bullion knot. Gilded brass mounted black leather scabbard has a small 8” knife fitted in the front with engraved hunting scenes on both sides of the blade. CONDITION: blade has a pleasing gray patina with minor staining. Hilt & scabbard show only traces of original gilding. Grip is undamaged. Scabbard shows light wear. The blade does not fit fully into the scabbard and it seems to be blocked near the tip. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18708/BF). $500-800.
