MAUSER FOR THE NON-ROTATING EXTRACTOR. These 2 original documents pertain to the very important non-rotating extractor which was the basis of the Mauser designed rifle actions subsequent to 1891 including the famous 1898 Type which is still in use today. The Assignment document is dated April 17, 1891 & is signed by Paul Mauser, assigning his title & interest of his "cartridge shell extractors for breech loading bolt guns" to Waffenfabik Mauser. This document also has an attachment dated May 22, 1891 signed by C.E. Mitchell, the Commissioner of Patents & recorded in "Liber V43 Page 438". The document has orange patent office seal w/ eagle motif & blue ribbon. The 2nd document is for "Letters Patent" and is dated January 19,1892 & signed by the Assistant Secretary of the Interior & Commissioner of Patents. This document contains clear & detailed drawings of the shell extractor & also includes a detailed written description. Interestingly, the papers are marked "No Model" as a working model was not provided. This document also has witnesses John Becker & Fred White on the drawings & Louis Colin & Paul Seybold on the description. The attorney for Paul Mauser was Arthur Fraser. On the back of the letters patent document is an affixed paper pertaining to a Carl T. Burchardt, in Berlin Germany, an engineer, & contains both the U.S. Eagle and a German eagle crest. The document is bound in a faded blue silk ribbon & has an unembossed orange seal. CONDITION: the 8 X 12 documents have the expected folding light edge wear & slight foxing. There is a notable pinkish staining to the letters patent document from being folded against the seal & unknown source. The writing is reasonably crisp & legible throughout. (02-16947-5/RW). $400-700.
