SWORD. This exceptionally attractive saber dates from about 1820 to about 1840 and has an overall length of 38" with a blade length of 31 3/8". The blade has a single wide fuller and boasts intense 3 color decoration. There are 2 etched foliate panels in white on each side, along with gold highlighted patriotic & foliate etching in 3 areas on each side. The field over the first 17" of the blade retains its vivid bluing. Gilded brass hilt has a fully articulated spread wing eagle on a large languet along with 23 stars. The quillon terminates acanthus leaves and the base of the knuckle bow is similarly decorated along with flags, a cannon barrel, and cannon balls. Large well executed eagle head pommel and faceted backstrap. Carved certifiably antique grip with cross hatching and horizontal ribbing. Heavily gilded solid brass scabbard with engraved rampant eagle. Several areas of the scabbard show engraved oak leaves particularly at the tip. CONDITION: blade is superb with just a few scattered minor stains. Hilt retains most of its original gilded finish. Grip has expected tight age cracks with a minor chip near the pommel. Scabbard has areas of original gilded finish and shows a few minor surface imperfections, but no notable dents. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18390/BF). $2,500-4,000.
