SAMUEL ST. CLAIR. Cal. 44 smooth bore. NSN. Bbl. 37" full oct. Initials on bbl. attributed to Samuel St. Clair. Percussion lock is unmarked & the sideplate is of the Berks County style. The 4 piece brass patchbox has 5 piercings & the stock is nicely curled maple. Dbl. set triggers. The stock is incise carved front rear of the cheekpiece & at the rear ramrod ferrule. Samuel St. Clair (1823-1849) worked in Union/Jackson Township, Snyder County & in Walker Township, Juniata County. He was born in 1793 & died in 1849. In 1835 & 1838 he was assessed as a gunsmith in Union Township. CONDITION: sound & original throughout w/ the only noticeable problem being a target sight added on top bbl. flat. There are plugged holes in the rear of bbl. & in the bbl. tang where a tube sight had been mounted. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19619/RG). ANTIQUE. $1,800-2,500.
