ACTION ARMY, S# 3578. Cal. 45. Bbl. 7 1/2". Standard configuration, “as found” potential Indian used Colt Single Action Army, manufactured early 1874, from lot 4 which were mostly issued to the 2nd & 4th US cavalry. S# 3632 is documented revolver found 6 or 7 miles from the Custer battlefield in 1880, possibly captured at the Battle of Rosebud where 2nd cavalry saw action. Kopek notes: “The overall external appearance of this revolver would tend to make this writer believe that our example revolver had been Indian captured.” Revolver is missing loading assembly & appears purposely removed. S#s & US surcharge have been purposely obliterated consistent w/ possible Indian use. CONDITION: good overall, appears original & matching “as found”, triggerguard & backstrap screws replaced, grip unserialized. Correct bbl. address w/ daggers, brown iron patina, S#s as noted are obliterated from frame triggerguard & backstrap, “US” also obliterated. S# on bbl. & cyl. both discernible & untouched, as are sm. Ainsworth “A”s. Mechanically fine, good rifled bore. (01-20390/JS). ANTIQUE. $5,000-8,000.
