BAYONET TRAPDOOR SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 523199. Bbl. 32" marked on top left at receiver w/ vertical "VP" over eagle head acceptance mark "P" proof. Also marked over chamber "A". Buffington rear sight marked "R". Blade front sight w/ blued steel sight cover. Lock w/ 3 position tumbler is marked w/ eagle "U.S. SPRINGFIELD". Rifle fitted w/ ramrod bayonet. Stock retained by 2 bbl. bands. 1 piece trigger guard. Sling & stacking swivels are present. Buttplate has swinging door for access to cleaning rod compartment. Walnut stock marked on left side w/ faint boxed "SWP" over "1891". Marked under grip w/ faint encircled "P" script proof. CONDITION: stock has been professionally cleaned leaving markings somewhat faint w/ light wear, staining & handling marks. Wrist has very fine crack behind breech plug tang. Metal turning gray & patina w/ thinning & wear. Bbl. has notable oxidation & very fine pitting throughout. Breech area has coating of hard protective grease. Bore has a frosted appearance but retains sharp lands & a sm. degree of shine. PROVENANCE: from the Estate Collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (01-23827/RW). ANTIQUE. $900-1,200.
