“PINKERTON AGENCY, JOHN CLARK”. Cal. 38. S# 71860. Standard configuration of 1870s cartridge conversion from model 1851 Navy rimfire with five inch barrel. The backstrap appears to have original script inscription “Pinkerton Agency * John Clark”. There is a 1984 letter from dealer Ronald Ogan telling a bit of the history of this revolver and guessing who John Clark might be. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: modern Colt casing for display, compartmented for revolver and 21 original 38 caliber cartridges and blanks, vintage cabinet card photograph of mustachioed gent who fits the stereotype for a detective of the late Victorian era, and a facsimile Pinkerton detective badge. CONDITION: good to very good overall, revolver is refinished, markings mostly discernible, though address and serial number on barrel or partially obliterated. There are numerous small dings on the back strap, but the inscription is still discernible. Mechanically functional, good rifle bore with pitting. PROVENANCE: Ron Ogan, Little John’s Auction, Collection of Horst Kreiner. (01-24004/JS). $5,000-7,000.
