PATRIOTIC POSTERS. These posters were designed to appeal to patriotism & encourage the public to support the war effort. They have great visual appeal while conveying their message.
1) This poster by the U.S. Treasury Department is an appeal to the public to continue to purchase the stamps issued by the treasury department to support war efforts. They were available in denominations of $.25 and $5. The $5 stamps earned 4% interest and could be redeemed in 5 years. The picture shows a stern faced Uncle Sam w/ his outstretched arms encompassing a uniformed soldier w/ an upraised right hand & a well dressed business man holding a W.S.S. document. The poster is titled "Your War Savings Pledge" & "Our Boys Make Good Their Pledge Are You Keeping Your?" The polychromatic colors in poster are blue, white & tan & poster has a Boxed W.S.S. War Savings Stamps title. Poster marked at bottom "Government Printing Office". Poster is approx. 21 1/2" W X 32 1/2" L. CONDITION: Poster has very good appearance w/ some light staining, folding & sm. tears near edges. Glass front has approx. 8" crack along the bottom right edge.
2) This poster is from the United States Food Administration. The US Food Administration was formed to encourage the voluntary conservation of food by the public. This administration was headed by Herbert Hoover who was the 31st U. S. President of the United States. The poster is from a lithograph signed by Harvey Dunn, 1917. Marked also in lower right hand corner "LATHAM LITHO & PIC. CO. BROOKLYN NY". The poster which has the Food Administration logo in the top left corner shows 2 grimacing American soldiers w/ bayoneted rifles running to attack German trenches in a winter scene. The poster states: "Victory is a Question of Stamina. Send - the Wheat - Meat - Fat - Sugar. The fuel for Fighter" "United States Food Administration". The poster is framed professionally in glass fronted metal frame. CONDITION: the poster has some scattered sm. spots of staining & edge wear but retains it prominent coloration. The glass front has a sm. crack in the lower left corner.
3) Attractive poster advertising government bonds for the 3rd Liberty Loan. The poster shows an immigrant family standing at attention. The father has removed his cap as a salute to the American flag shown waving in the background. The background also depicts subdued outlines of a passenger ship and the poster is lettered "REMEMBER!" "The Flag of Liberty Support It! Buy U.S. Government Bonds. 3rd Liberty Loan" Poster is unsigned but marked in lower left corner 6-A & marked in lower right corner "HEYWOOD STRASSER & VOIGT LITHO. CO. N.Y.". The subtle subdued colors have great visual appeal. CONDITION: poster in very good condition w/ little or no visible wear or staining.
