CARBINE. Cal. 6.5 Jap. S# 1114842. Bbl. 19". Blade front sight with protective ears. Ladder rear sight graduated to 2000m. Interesting Type 38 Arisaka carbine that was reworked by the Chinese with an unusual number scheme. Matching serial numbers are present on the bayonet lug, rear band, rear sight parts, bolt handle, safety, firing pin, and floorplate. The dust cover is mismatched, and other visible parts appear unnumbered. The receiver top has a fully intact mum and Type 38 markings. Right side of the receiver has the Kokura/Tokyo Arsenal symbol and serial number. One-piece Asian hardwood stock with bottom-mounted sling swivels & leather sling. The left-side sling swivels are also present. A replacement cleaning rod is present. Right side of the butt has a Chinese inscription that appears to talk about the Battle of West Hunan in 1945, where Nationalist Chinese forces defeated the last major Japanese offensive of the war. The translation states that five battalions of the Japanese 116th Division were annihilated by the Chinese 51st Division. The inscription states that Captain Jones made a great contribution to the fight, and the carbine was presented by the commander of the 51st Division to Captain Jones on May 25th, 1945. The consignor states that this carbine was presented to an American advisor, and it is likely that Captain Jones was the advisor. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: brass muzzle cover. CONDITION: stock set has an added finish with notable cracks on the left side of the butt and some long handguard cracks. Stock set otherwise shows scattered dings, scratches, and handling wear. Dust cover is turning gray with scattered oxidation and pitting. Balance of metal retains 40% of its arsenal blue with overall fading to brown, some pitting, and scattered oxidation. Fair bore with scattered pitting & oxidation but evident rifling. PROVENANCE: the collection of Curtis H. Halvorson. (23-5912/MJC). CURIO. $500-800.
