ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 8x57 (8mm Mauser). S# 17322c. Bbl. 23 1/2". Blade front sight with protective hood. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2000m. All visible numbered parts are matching and they appear force matched possibly by an arsenal. Safety and rear sight parts are electropencil numbered matching. Late war Mauser Oberndorf K98k with receiver top marked "Mod 98/svwmb". Rifle appears to be reworked post WWII. Front of stock has hex shaped stacking device that was purportedly used by the French and West Germans. No other visible signs of French use. Left side of receiver and bbl. have WWII German party symbol firing proofs. Blued finish. Laminated stock set with left side sling provisions and repro leather sling. Cleaning rod is present. CONDITION: stock set has arsenal rework appearance, with added finish, a small crack at handguard tip, a gouge on left side behind rear sight, scattered dings, and handling wear. Metal retains 92% arsenal blue, with some light and edge wear, most notably on bottom metal. Action is stiff, likely due to grease buildup, but functions properly when hand-cycled. Very good, bright bore, with some light pitting and dried grease but strong rifling. PROVENANCE: the estate collection of Charles Wagner. (24-4618/MJC). CURIO. $800-1,200.
