Cal. 12 Ga. 2-5/8". S# 4460 (1878). The 30" Damascus barrels are engraved "Stephen Grant 67a. St. James's Street. London." on slightly raised narrow game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs. S# are on bottoms of barrels along with "E.C.H." (E. C. Hodges, the actual maker and patentee of this gun and its action; which was designed to circumvent the Purdey action. It has one large bite which engages the rear lump and two secondary locks that engage a transverse square pin, also through the rear lump. Extractor system is housed in front lump.) Round bodied top lever action is fitted with back spring pennisula locks with rebounding round bodied serpentine hammers. Action and locks are engraved with 80% coverage, very small scroll. Lockplates are engraved "Stephen Grant"; sides of action are engraved "Stephen Grant's Patent"; top of action is engraved "Patent". Blued trigger guard with scroll on bow has S# on tang. Straight grip buttstock of very well marbled and figured European walnut measures 14-1/2" over checkered wood butt with engraved steel heel and toe plates. Flat top point pattern checkering is at grip and a vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching splinter forend has very interesting Anson type release with hidden button in forend tip. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .729. R .729. Restriction: L .000 (Cyl). R .000 (Cyl). (Gun made before choke boring became mainstream.) Wall thickness: L .029. R .030. STOCK: DAH: 2-1/8". DAC: 1-1/2". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14-1/2". WEIGHT: 6 lb. 13 oz. CONDITION: good. Barrels retaining most of their original brown which shows considerable hand wear. Action and locks are mostly pewter gray but show traces of original case hardening color. About 10% original blue remains on top lever and trigger guard. Stocks with most of their original oil finish have many scattered marks. Grip checkering shows moderate wear, forend has more wear along with 6-7 fairly deep dents. Bores are considerable pitted. Action is tight (hook shows peening); locks are fine. A good high quality gun; thickness of barrels should allow for re-boring to remove pits and leave some choke. (01-24215/MGM).
