AND IT'S COMMANDING OFFICER FELIX GRAF VON LUCKNER. The Seeadler was the only sailing ship that was tasked as an armed merchant raider during WWI. The sail powered ship was a solution for the difficult logistic task of fueling coal powered ships around the globe. Commanding officer Luckner was one of the few German Naval officers that were capable of sailing such a ship. The German Navy disguised the ship as the Norwegian vessel the Maletta and some of the crew were capable of speaking Norwegian. The disguise worked multiple times as the ship toured the sea and fooled the British blockade ships. The ship terrorized ally ships until 1917 when the ship was wrecked against a reef by a reported tidal wave in the Mopelia Islands near Tahiti. After the wreck the crew traversed 3700 KM in an open boat to Fiji where Luckner and the crew were captured. This grouping contains a detonated casing with a brass plaque that reads "This shell from blown up magazine of the three masted steel sailing ship SEEADLER World War I raider, put on a reef by a tidal wave on Mopelia Commanded by Count Felix Von Lukner. In the binder are some letters from 1941 to Frank Jaeger from Russ Dickinson discussing the shell being given to Jaeger in return of a favorable recommendation to the Navy. Also included is a signed photo of Count Felix Graf von Luckner in uniform, three ring binder with internet research and the book "COUNT LUCKNER THE SEA DEVIL" by Lowell Thomas. CONDITION: overall fine. (02-26305/ZAL). NON-GUN. $200-400.
