MANNLICHER SCHOENAUR BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 256 Gibbs Mag. S# 2565A. These rifles gained a fine reputation in Africa and India for most plains game and became quite popular. Examples are usually found in well worn condition and with shot out bores. This rifle remains in remarkably fine condition and is possibly the best extant. It has 26" tapered round barrel fitted with island rear base holding one standing four folding leaf express rear sights. Sling eye and tall front ramp holding steel bead are soldered on. Rear portion of barrel is engraved "FOR GIBBS'" "256 MAGNUM" "CARTRIDGE ONLY". Left side is stamped with London nitro proofs; right, with Steyr number "B5420" and Gibbs number "2565A". Steyr action is marked "MODELL" "1903" on receiver ring. Sidewall is marked "STEYR 1906". Bolt has normal butter knife handle and also bears both S#s. Trigger is of single pull. Solid milled trigger guard has been nicely thinned and shaped. Rifle takes down with removal of screw mounted forend and unscrewing barrel. Steel trap capped pistol grip stock of dark, well veined and lightly figured European walnut measures 14-1/2" over fully checkered steel buttplate. Well cut slightly flat topped point pattern checkering is at grip and around forend. A sling eye and vacant silver oval are on toeline. Metal plates separate butt and action portion of stock from removable forend. CONDITION: exceptionally fine with only slight evidence of ever being used. Barrel and action retain over 95% original blue with some sharp edge wear and a few minor marks. There is evidence of light cleaning with pin prick pitting on top of bolt handle. About 80% case hardening color remains on grip cap. Strong original temper blue remains on screws and bolt stop. Stock retains nearly all of its original hand rubbed oil finish with only a very few handling marks evident. Bore is bright, sharp and shiny throughout. Mechanically smooth. A truly superb classic British rifle. (25-2473/MGM). CURIO. $3,000-5,000.
