MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 6.5 Carcano. S# NS1766. Bbl. 33 7/8". Tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. Stud type front sight. Receiver is unmarked. Bbl. is marked on the octagonal reinforce "1884" "BRESCIA". These rifles were developed as the single shot Vetterli model 1870. They were converted in 1887 by the addition of a Vitali magazine making a 4 shot repeater. The rifles were again converted to 6.5 Carcano because of a shortage of rifles during WWI. The conversion included installing yet another mag. & relining the bore for the smaller diameter bullet. The rifle has a 1 piece walnut stock w/ matching S# on right side of butt. The forend is retained by 2 clamping bands. Bottom swivels. Cleaning rod is present. Bayonet lug on right side of bbl. CONDITION: stock has considerable wear due to long service w/ thinning arsenal rework finish & numerous handling marks throughout. Sm. crack behind receiver tang. Filler on left side of magazine well appears partly detached. Metal has turned an overall brown patina w/ wear, oxidation & fine pitting. Bore has visible rifling but w/ dark oxidized appearance.
