Cal. 6.5x52 Carcano. S# YM8188. S# matches on the receiver and bbl. Bbl. 17 3/4". Import-marked at the bottom of the bbl. These carbines were converted from Model 1891 infantry rifles in the mid-1920s. The conversion included a modified rear sight, graduated to 1500 meters. The original bbl. was shortened and turned down forward of the rear sight base; this allowed the standard bayonet to be fitted to the muzzle. The front sight is the standard blade type. The bolt handle has been turned down. Receiver is marked only with the S# and a tiny crown acceptance mark. Bbl. is marked on the right flat at the chamber end as "AG". The upper right flat is marked with "FARE 25 TERNI" in an oval. Also marked with "16" as the original manufacture date, it has a 5-pointed star indicating a rebored bbl. The top flat is marked "TERNI". The top left flat has the S#, and the left flat has "SG" in an oval. Upper band has a bayonet lug. Cleaning rod is present. Walnut stock set. The non-matching buttstock is marked by a soldier at the buttplate on the left side, "TRAROTT". Brown leather sling with brass studs. CONDITION: stock set is well worn, with numerous handling marks throughout. Neat inletted repair behind the receiver tang. Handguard has a 1" crack at the forward end. Metal has a worn, faded original blue finish with numerous handling marks. Bolt was polished and is now turning gray. Fair, worn bore, turning dark. (24-1371/RW). CURIO. $250-400.
