Cal. 38. NSN. Bbl. 44" Octagon with dovetailed brass blade front sight & buckhorn rear sight. Signed by maker J. G. Phillips. The full length stock is profusely decorated with numerous inlays including a patriotic federal style eagle on the raised cheek rest and is mounted with brass furniture and a finely engraved pierced patchbox. It utilizes a pierced set trigger. CONDITION: Once a stunning example of craftsmanship this rifle has evidence of hanging over the mantle of a fireplace for years with some crazing to the stock. The stock wrist has an early repaired break with some wood loss in the wrist area and around the lock. There are a couple of the inlays missing, an epoxy repair behind the bolster and large chip at the forend cap. Despite the conditional issues the rifle has a rustic look that remains attractive.
