ENGLISH PATTERN TRADE RIFLE. Cal. .44 caliber. NSN. 49" overall. 34" octagonal barrel. Pictured and described on pages 148-149 of "THE FUR TRADE". Author Milton Von Damm: "The American Fur Company purchased rifles from England as well as American gunsmiths. J.J. Henry began duplicating the English product and by 1828 his company was supplying all of the English Pattern rifles to John Jacob Astor's company. Published information asserts that nearly all of the English Pattern rifles were made by the Henry firm for the American Fur company until 1842 when the AFC closed it doors. This gun is a rare English Pattern Henry rifle that may have been ordered by a different firm because it is a smaller caliber than known AFC orders. The Ewing Brothers purchased some English Pattern rifles from the Henry firm and probably others did also. the barrel of this example has been shortened and the stock cut down. The English model is reputed to have been very popular with many trappers. CONDITION: good to very good. PROVENANCE: Lifelong Collection of author Milton Von Damm. (01-24784/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
