SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 40, marked "Mid-Range 70", (40-70 Sharps Bottleneck). S# 200317. Bbl. 24" octagon to rnd. Top flat is marked "J.P. LOWER" referring to the notable early Denver City gunsmith and retailer. Left side of receiver is marked "A" in an octagonal box over patent date "APRIL 6, 1869". The A series sporting rifles were assembled from left over parts circa. 1879-1882 and show a great variety of features. The majority of these were altered from percussion actions and offered in .40 or 45 caliber. Estimated total of 700 in S# range from 200,001-200,700. Most were shipped to Denver dealers Carlos Gove or J.P. Lower. "CALIBRE 40" is found forward of the breech end of the bbl. Right bbl. flat is marked "MID RANGE 70". Rnd. section of bbl. has standard "Old Reliable" marking. German silver blade Rocky Mountain front sight with sporting leaf V-notch rear sight. Action has double set triggers. Blued finish with case colored hammer, lever, buttplate, and patchbox. 2-screw fastened walnut forearm and straight grip stock with patchbox, sling swivel, and steel carbine buttplate. CONDITION: beautifully restored 03/02/2001 by Doug Turnbull Restorations. Near excellent as restored retaining over 98% restored finish showing scattered small scratches on the metal and light handling marks on the wood. Sound action and triggers.
