PERCUSSION GUN. Cal. about 58. NSN. Bbl. 34" octagon w/ smooth bore. Top flat has partial marking "LAN" remaining at breech end indicating bbl. was shortened at some time. Lock is marked "J.BUSWELL / GLENS FALLS / N.Y.". Plain trigger fashioned of brass. Brass blade front sight w/ fixed V notch rear sight. Key fastened half length cheekpiece maple stock w/ pewter tip. Brass pierced patchbox w/ rectangular lid. Brass fittings include crescent buttplate, toeplate, trigger guard, sideplate & thimble. Comb has 7 point star. Replacement hardwood ramrod on iron under rib held by 2 plain iron pipes that appear to be replacement. Back portion of under rib have soldered brass plates on both sides. Weight: 8 lbs., 2.3 oz. James Buswell was born in Leominster, Mass. in 1799, where he was apprenticed in the gun making trade. Relocated to Glen Falls, NY where he continued in the trade until his death around 1873. CONDITION: metal finish has faded to gray w/ evidence of touch up. Refinished stock has cracks & repairs in lock, side plate & tip areas. Fresh cracks are found between lock, trigger guard & toe area. Cracked top tang. Dark bore. (01-14576/DS). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
