FRIGATE ENTERING PORTSMOUTH. PLEASE NOTE: While this painting is unsigned, it is unquestionably a work by James E. Buttersworth. This unsigned oil on canvas depicting a three masted frigate sailing right to left through a series of smaller sailing vessels off the harbor, a lighthouse visible on a bluff in middle distance. White capped turbulence between towering clouds and blue skies. Housed in a gold gilt molded frame with name plate. On reverse is an old N.R. Omell Gallery tag is affixed on frame and stretcher identifying the painting which states that this painting was in the Exhibition of Marine Paintings of the 18th and 19th century, No. 44. SIZE: Sight is 18" x 24". Overall is 23" x 29". CONDITION: professionally restored and relined at some time. Generally good. (05-711/TG). $4,500-6,500.
