WAR CRIMINALS. 26 x 37.25” silk Hinomaru “meatball” flag that William M. Ownbey of Greensboro, NC collected signatures of 26 of the 28 “class A” Japanese suspected war criminals held at Sugamo Prison. There is framed 2004 newspaper article telling his story about the flag. Six of these prisoners were executed, 2 died in prison during trials, and 19 were given life sentences, though all paroled by 1956. CONDITION: flag once framed has light fading to ink signatures, edges paper taped to art board for framing, not glued down. (02-19523/JS). $4,000-8,000.
