Overall length: 40". Blade length: 28 1/8". A beautiful example of a high grade katana with an irregular hamon and a gilded habaki. There is one blackened and one gilded seppa above and below the four lobbed tsuba. The darkened tsuba has several gold inlayed areas, highlighted by piercings. One vignette shows a golden sun amongst pierced clouds. Another shows flowering vines with pierced leaves, and there are kidney-shaped inlays on either side of the nakago opening. The nakago has one mekugi-ana and an eleven character signature on one side. Please see photograph for signature. The fuchi and kashira match perfectly and have numerous gold inlays featuring floral and foliate motifs. The tsuka has white same and a black tsuka-ito. The gold menuki represents a boar charging out of bushes. The wooden saya has a black enameled finish with a gilded brass kojiri. The exquisite kurikata has numerous gold floral inlays and a gilded brass shitodome. An attractive but worn sageo is attached through the kurikata. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: certification paperwork dated May 25, 1984 with a detailed description of the sword. Japanese documents describing the sword and mounts with photographs of the sword with red Japanese seals. The sword comes with a black and gold patterned, silk lined, storage bag. CONDITION: the blade has a superior polish. The tsuba as well as the entire tsuka show very light wear. The saya also shows very light wear with minor scuffs to the finish. The sageo shows moderate wear overall. (02-23631/BF). $4,000-6,000.
