A high-ranking Naval officer’s dress sword with an overall length of 32 7/8" and a blade length of 25 1/4”. The blade has a single medium fuller near the spine and a simulated wavy hamon. Gilded brass hilt with a 5-petal cherry blossom design on the guard, backstrap & pommel. Locking rear guard with wire wrapped white ray skin grip. A high-grade gold bullion and red sword knot is attached to the hilt. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard with 5-petal cherry blossom design on the mounts. CONDITION: blade shows no blemishes. Hilt retains nearly 100% of its original gilding. Grip is complete and undamaged, as is the wire wrap. Scabbard mounts have 95% of the original gilded finish remaining. Leather remains quite strong. There is a partial label attached near the top of the scabbard with numerous Japanese characters. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18424/BF). $700-900.
