Overall length: 8”. Blade length: 4 3/8”. A scarce Japanese seppuku or hara-kari dagger. This example was reportedly a WWII GI “bring back” and was taken from an aircraft pilot. The blade has an irregular wavy hamon with a 2 1/4" false edge at the point. There is a 1 1/2", medium hi above a 2 3/4", very narrow hi. The blade has 3 chiseled kanji on one side near the spine and 2 on the other side at the front of the medium fuller. Brass habaki with an exceptionally well-made wooden tsuka and matching saya. There are decorative black & cream-colored rings at the base of the tsuka and top of the saya. The dagger comes with a dark green cloth storage pouch with a silk tie at the top. These daggers have never been common but are exceptionally rarely seen today. CONDITION: the blade is undamaged but would benefit from a professional polishing. The tsuka & saya show light wear overall. (02-21148/BF). $500-800.
