Overall length: 28 1/4". Blade length: 20 1/4". This wakizashi quite likely dates from 1400 to 1600 and could have been shortened from a full-length katana. The blade has a straight hamon with a blackened silver over copper habaki with diagonal striations. There are two seppa above and below the blackened non-magnetic gold-inlaid tsuba. The nakago has two mekugi-ana and is not signed. The tsuka has a beautiful matching gold-inlaid fuchi and kashira with a devil mask on the kashira. The menuki are also heavily gold-inlaid and match the other fittings. The tsuka-ito is black and the same is white. The saya is deep blood red lacquer with blackened highlights. There is a kogatana on each side of the saya. CONDITION: blade has a superb polish. The tsuba, fuchi, kashira, and menuki show very light wear and combine to make an artistically striking wakizashi with their gold on black motifs. The saya also has been expertly crafted and lacquered. (02-22636/BF). $1,800-2,400.
