Overall length: 26 1/4". Blade length: 20". A 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition sword worn by the Jefferson Guard at the St. Louis World's Fair. The Jefferson Guard served as a private security service and also acted as tour guides for official events. They wore uniquely designed uniforms and all carried this type of sword. Each sword bore its own number at the ricasso along with the Ames mfg. marks. Blade is etched over 2/3 of its length with various foliate motifs along with "LOUISIANA PURCHASE EXPOSITION" on one side and "JEFFERSON GUARD" on the other side. The ricasso is etched on one side, "260" and "AMES + SWORD CO: CHICOPEE. MASS. ". Cruciform style hilt with brass loop guard with "J.G." in the center. Brass ferrule and globular pommel. Black painted wood grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina with scattered areas of old oxidation. Hilt is solid but a bit loose. Finish on grip is approx. 80%.
