Cal. 40. NSN. Bbl. 39 1/2" octagon. Top flat has initials “J.L.”. Brass blade front sight w/ fixed V notch rear sight. Engraved trade lock is marked “Warranted”. Double set triggers. Pin fastened full length tock of curly maple w/ Roman nose on cheek piece. Rectangular lid pierced & segmented patchbox w/ bird-like finial. Brass fittings include crescent buttplate, toe plate, finger curl trigger guard, side plate, forearm plate, thimble & nose cap. Replacement ramrod is held by 2 plain pipes. German silver decoration consists of oval wrist plate & old man in the moon on cheek piece. Cheek piece plate is missing. American Gunsmiths by Frank Sellers has the following listing: “LONG, JESSE, Beavertown, Pennsylvania, Percussion Kentucky rifles. (Gabel)”. CONDITION: metal has heavy brown patina w/ worn markings having pitting in breech area. Right side between lock & rear sight show a series of heavy dents. Stock has added finish over wear & handling marks. Forearm section shows numerous cracks w/ large missing chips. Stock is cracked through the wrist area.
