Cal. 45. NSN. Bbl. 8 1/2” round w/ smoothbore. Lock is marked “J. Hills”. Pin fastened curly maple full length stock w/ incise carved borders along bbl. channel. Brass fittings include butt cap, trigger guard, side plate & faceted thimble. Tapered hardwood ramrod held to bbl. by a single faceted pipe. American Gunsmiths by Frank Sellers has the following listing: “HILLS, JOHN, (1732-1808). Goshen, Connecticut, 1754-1774, Winchester, Connecticut, 1774-1784, Charlotte, Vermont, 1784-1810. Son of Benoni Hills. Flintlock pistols and muskets. (Hobbies 8-69)”. CONDITION: metal has a dark gray patina showing scattered marks & dark spots. Wood shows wear & handling marks w/ chips & cracks forward of trigger guard. Lock has weaker than normal spring tension. Pitted bore. (01-23099/DS). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
