24" Original file branded haft, characteristic unsharpened 8.75" head, 3.5" cutting edge, there are several lines of script text on blade which is indiscernible. Haft has attached drop made from thimble and old cloth fragments and ribbons. John Wilson (1805-1870) from Chadron, Nebraska is among the very few frontier blacksmiths whose work is known as he signed several of his very distinct forged heads. This tomahawk is pictured and described in Mark Francis “RARE AMERICAN INDIAN WEAPONS” volume 2, pages 34-37. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: small file of provenance and collector history. CONDITION: very good overall, appears original including haft secured by well patinaed pewter gasket. head is smooth gray iron patina with pitting which obscures the script inscription. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18494/JS). $3,000-4,000.
