23" File branded haft, characteristic unsharpened 8.75" head, 4" cutting edge, decorated with incised lines, stars, engraved floral patterns on both sides. John Wilson (1805-1870) from Chadron, Nebraska is among the very few frontier blacksmiths whose work is well known and especially his rocker rolled designs which is exhibited here on one side. The lines of engraved floral pattern on one side are filled with unknown gold color enamel like material. This tomahawk is pictured and described in Mark Francis "RARE AMERICAN INDIAN WEAPONS" volume 2, page 37. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: small file of provenance and collector history. CONDITION: very good overall, head is smooth gray/white iron patina, staining and pin prick pitting. Haft fits poorly, shimmed with leather gasket. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E.
