24" file branded spotted haft, characteristic Wilson unsharpened 8.25" head, 4" cutting edge, incised rocker-style engraving seen on all Wilson hawks. This is among his finest survivors with bird on one side and stemmed flower on other. John Wilson (1805-1870) from Chadron, Nebraska is among the very few frontier blacksmiths whose work is known as he signed several of his very distinct forged heads. Several of his hawks are published in John Baldwin & Mark Francis books. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of pages from Francis & Baldwin text. CONDITION: fine overall, haft appears of recent manufacture, but well done in Plains style. Head is fine with minor staining, appears unused with crisp design. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18787/JS). $2,500-3,000.
