Cal. 5.7 Johnson. S# 109A. Bbl. 18". These semi-auto rifles were developed by Melvin Johnson, well-known for his WWII rifles and light machine guns. The 5.7 Johnson, also called the 5.7 Spitfire, is the M1 Carbine case necked to 22 caliber. Although receivers were purchased from many sources, this example is marked on the rear "PMC" for Plainfield Machine Company. The receiver ring is marked "JOHNSON GUNS / NEW HAVEN, CONN. / M.M.J. 5.7". The rifles were assembled with many of the then widely available M1 Carbine parts. Williams adjustable aperture rear sight mounts in receiver dovetail. Unmarked barrel sports a ramp type front sight. Insert is not present in the bead sight. Receiver is drilled on the left rear for a side mounted aperture front sight. Six o'clock slide is marked "SA". Unmarked milled trigger guard with push button safety. Dog leg hammer marked "IH". Round bolt polished bright is marked "U.U". Checkered walnut sporting stock with raised Monte Carlo comb and cheekpiece. Black buttplate and grip cap with white spacers. Handguard is commercial production. MAGS: 1 detachable 5 round sporting type. CONDITION: stock set has light wear with scattered small handling marks. Metal retains 90% of its original blue finish except receiver, which is a plumb coloration throughout. Very good shiny bore. PROVENANCE: From the Lifetime Collection of Malcolm Zickler, Ret. USAF Lt. Col. (26-721/RW). CURIO. $700-900.
