UNFIRED SINCE CONVERSION TO PERCUSSION BY MANTON WITH CASE AND ACCESSORIES.
Cal. 10 Ga. S# 5817 (1812). The 36" twisted steel barrel has octagonal breech section which transitions to sixteen sided and then to round through fancy wedding band. It is also fitted with underrib. Bottom of barrel is stamped with S#, London proofs and barrel maker's initials "CL" (Charles Lancaster). Barrel is converted to percussion with new patent breech with vented platinum blowout. Top of patent breech is engraved with shell motif and scrolls. Breech iron with filed in fence is near fully engraved with very well cut open shaded scroll. Lock with flat plate having square tail is fitted with flat faced serpentine hammer with dolphin head. Lock plate has feather border engraving with a stand of arms at tail. Scroll engraving that matches breech iron is at front. Center is engraved "Joseph Manton" "LONDON". Trigger plate has stylized pineapple finial. Trigger guard with more arms on bow, has S# on tang. Straight grip stock of dense lightly marbled European walnut measures 14" over steel buttplate with long top tang engraved with arms and flags. Square checkering is at grip. A vacant silver rectangle with clipped corners is at top of grip. Forend tip is horn and stock attaches to barrel with two captive sidebolts through oval silver escutcheons. Greenheart ramrod with brass tip and tail (worm under cap) mounts through two plain pipes and beaded steel thimble. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in its original mahogany case with flush mounted circular "D" ring handle. The number "3" is painted within circle. Case has key lock closure and escutcheon is of inlaid bone and teardrop shaped (typical for Manton cases). Case is lined in green cloth and a paper Joseph Manton Davies Street label is in lid as used between 1812-19. Case contains a pigskin covered powder flask by James Dixon, a leather shot snake by Hawksley, brass adjustable powder and shot measures with ebony handles, an Eley cap tin and another tin for gun nipples, there is also an old Japanned tin with brass top for Evans rangoon oil. Lock sits on a mahogany platform with bone knob. Also included is the original key. CONDITION: exceptionally fine as completely refurbished at time of conversion to percussion. Barrel retaining nearly all of its superb rebrown with excellent definition to twist pattern. New patent breech retains over 70% case hardening color with loss due to flaking on sides. Nipple is bright, appears never used. Breech iron, lock and trigger plate retain nearly all case hardening color. Reblue of trigger guard and buttplate remains nearly intact with only a few minor marks and small rub on heel. Temper blue of trigger blade and stock bolts is very strong, over 80%. Renewed varnish finish of stock is also exceptionally fine with only a few minor marks noted around lock screw and a 1 1/2" vertical compression on right side of butt. Bore is very shiny and shows a few minor striations. Lock is fine. Case retains most old finish on exterior with some added varnish over marks and scratches. Interior cloth is very fine with some minor rubs, partitions are good, label is very fine, somewhat foxed. Accessories are generally very fine with shiny brass and bright Japan finish, leather of shot snake is very good with minor cracks. Key still retains most of its original bright polish. This gun is listed in 'THE MANTONS: GUNMAKERS by Keith Neal & Back on page 249 where it is listed as a cased single barreled 10 bore converted to cap lock. (01-22998/MGM). ANTIQUE. $8,000-12,000.
