Cal. 45. NSN. On top of the 30.75" oct. bbls. is Josiah Harding's "JH" signature. Per Frank Seller's "American Gunsmiths", Josiah Harding operated out of Covington, Pennsylvania from 1882-1890 making underhammer Kentuckys. An obituary in 1894 states he was Major General of Pennsylvania State troops of Lycoming, Clinton, Bradford & Tioga Counties before the Civil War. A similar example of this rifle is on page 225 of "The Pictorial History of the Underhammer Gun" by Herschel C. Logan. The right side of the bottom barrel is stamped "B LOSEY". Per "American Gunsmiths" by Frank Sellers, B Losey was a barrel maker from Caroline, New York circa 1850-1864. German silver blade front sight & elevator adj. rear sight. Sides of barrel have pipes for 2 hardwood ramrods. Right side percussion lock has single trigger that can fire both hammers; bottom hammer uses triggerguard as spring. Walnut buttstock w/ brass sideplate, crescent buttplate, toeplate & patchbox. Pewter end cap. German silver buck in on left side. CONDITION: balance of barrel & lock is brown patina with cleaned pitting around breech, brazing around ramrod pipes & spots of corrosion. Wood has good finish with handling marks. Brass shows patina with marks. Dark pitted bores. Lock appears mechanically fine. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (01-27474/MD). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
