Cal. 45. NSN. Bbl. 30 7/8". Half-stock percussion rifle produced by Lane & Read of Boston, MA. The lockplate is marked "LANE & READ/ BOSTON", with "R B H" stamped on the top flat of the octagonal bbl. towards the breech. Plain wood half-stock with brass buttplate, patchbox, trigger guard, square wedge escutcheon and ramrod ferrule. Aged pewter nosecap. Separate 1-piece wood ramrod channel is missing its forward brass ferrule. Blade front sight with V-notch rear sight. CONDITION: iron components exhibit a dark brown patina, with areas of surface oxidation overall. Bbl. exhibits an area of corrosion around the percussion bolster. Brass components also exhibit a heavy dark brown patina overall. Lower buttplate tang and trigger guard finial are loose, with the rear of the trigger guard having broken at one time. Stock exhibits scattered marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, with some chipping present around the screw slot on the left side. Ramrod channel exhibits a crack that stems from the tip and runs approximately 12 1/2" down the center to the ramrod ferrule. (01-24463/MLW). ANTIQUE. $300-500.
